Short answer: A Singapore company can open a WeChat Official Account (公众号) with its own company documents, without a China business licence, and Start Media can help set it up alongside XHS (小红书). As of October 2026, overseas companies can register one service account, which can push to followers four times a month. Verification costs USD 99 per application, takes about 7 to 15 working days, and the account only works once verification passes.

Key takeaways

  • Overseas companies can register one Official Account each, and only the service account type is offered to them.

  • A service account can push to followers four times a calendar month. Posts without a push still appear on your profile.

  • Overseas verification costs USD 99 per application, charged whether or not it passes.

  • Review takes about 7 to 15 working days once all documents are in.

  • Verification must be renewed every year, or the account loses its badge and advanced features.

Facts in this guide were checked against published October 2026 guidance based on Tencent's help pages. WeChat changes its rules from time to time, so check the registration page before you apply.

What is a WeChat Official Account?

A WeChat Official Account (微信公众号) is a brand's page inside WeChat. You use it to:

  • Publish articles, news, menus and promotions.

  • Push updates to followers, which appear in their chat list.

  • Reply to customer messages.

  • Link to your WeChat Channels videos, Mini Program or booking page.

It works well for businesses that want to keep customers informed: restaurants with changing menus, schools with new classes, clinics with health tips, or property and finance firms that explain complex products.

Service account or subscription account?

There used to be two main types. Since November 2024, the old "subscription account" has been renamed simply "Official Account", and the "service account" keeps its name.

  • Official Account (formerly subscription account): one push per day. Mainly for mainland Chinese entities.

  • Service account: four pushes per month, with more advanced features once verified, including WeChat Pay and developer tools.

For a Singapore company, the choice is simple: overseas entities can only register a service account.

What documents does a Singapore company need?

  • Your company registration document. For a Singapore company, this is the ACRA Business Profile.

  • A colour scan of the account administrator's ID, both sides.

  • An application letter and an operation authorisation letter, in Chinese or English.

  • A phone bill, stamped office bill or bank statement for the contact person.

  • A trademark certificate or authorisation, if the account name uses a trademark.

Step by step: how to open the account

  1. Choose your account name. It should match your company name or registered trademark. Names that break the naming rules are sent back.

  2. Register as an overseas entity and choose Singapore as the country of registration.

  3. Upload the documents listed above, with clear colour scans.

  4. Pay the verification fee of USD 99 per application.

  5. Wait for review, usually 7 to 15 working days. Reply quickly if the reviewer asks for more.

  6. Set up your profile and menu, then publish your first articles.

  7. Renew verification every year.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Registering under a staff member's personal details. The account belongs to the entity that passed review, and Tencent's rules do not allow transferring or renting it.

  • Using a name that does not match your documents. This is a common reason for rejection, and you pay again for a new application.

  • Expecting daily pushes. A service account has four pushes a month, so plan each one carefully.

  • Letting verification lapse. You lose the badge and advanced features until you renew.

  • Translating English articles word for word. Write for Chinese-speaking readers in natural Chinese.

What should you post?

With four pushes a month, a simple plan works well:

  • One push for news or a new product.

  • One push for a useful guide, such as "How to choose…" or "What to know before…".

  • One push for a customer story or behind-the-scenes article.

  • One push for an offer or event.
